Frequently asked questions
Who is eligible to take in-car driving lessons?
In-car driving lessons are typically open to individuals who have reached the legal driving age in their region and possess a valid learner’s permit or driver’s license. In New York the minimum age to start driving is 16 years old.
Are in-car driving lessons one-on-one or in groups?
In-car driving lessons are conducted one-on-one to provide personalized attention and focused instruction to each student.
What happens if I'm a minor?
You must be at least 16 years old to apply for a driver’s license in New York State. If you’re under 18, you must also complete a 48-hour driver’s education course, which is offered at a number of DMV-approved high schools.
The course has a classroom component of 24 hours and an automobile component of 24 hours. You will only drive for six hours. For the rest, you will be observing a licensed driver.
Furthermore, DMV requires all teens younger than 18 to complete a 50-hour supervised driving period. The supervisor can be a parent, guardian, or driving instructor over 21 years old. Out of the 50 hours, at least 15 must be done at night and 10 during moderate-to-heavy traffic.
Since under-18 teens must wait for at least six months after completing driver’s education to take the road test, it is best to start your training as soon as possible.
What is the 5-Hour Pre-Licensing Course?
The 5-Hour Pre-Licensing Course by Crossway Driving School Inc. is a mandatory course for individuals seeking to obtain a driver’s license. It covers essential road safety topics and prepares you for responsible driving on the road.
Who needs to take the 5-Hour Pre-Licensing Course?
Anyone applying for a driver’s license in many states, including New York, is required to complete this course before taking the road test.
How do I start my process to get a CDL A Class to operate Tractor Trailers?
Like other CDLs, you must already have a regular driver’s license to apply for a Class A CDL. But unlike regular driver’s licenses and other CDLs, you must be at least 21 years old, not 18, to apply for a Class A CDL.
You will also need to pass a written exam and a road test. The written part is divided into three sections:
–GENERAL KNOWLEDGE: This section covers the basic rules of the road, signs, and signals.
-AIR BRAKES:Â This section covers the specific air brake system used on Class A vehicles.
-COMBINATION VEHICLES:Â This section covers the special skills and knowledge required to operate a tractor-trailer combination.
After passing the written exam and getting a Department of Transportation (DOT) physical (a medical exam), you will be issued a commercial learner permit (CLP) that allows you to practice driving with a licensed commercial driver. At Crossway Driving School Inc., we offer a comprehensive course covering all the material you need to know to pass the written exam and prepare for the road test. Our experienced and certified instructors will help you every step of the way.
How do I start my process to get a CDL B Class to operate School Buses?
Similar to other CDLs, obtaining a Class B CDL for driving a school bus requires you to hold a regular driver’s license. However, there’s a distinction in terms of age eligibility. Unlike regular driver’s licenses and some other CDL classes, you need to be at least 21 years old, not 18, to apply for a Class B CDL for school bus driving.
The process involves successfully completing a written examination and a practical road test. The written test is divided into three distinct sections:
- GENERAL KNOWLEDGE:Â This section encompasses essential road regulations, traffic signs, and signals that are fundamental for safe driving.
- AIR BRAKES:Â This portion delves into the specifics of the air brake systems used in Class B vehicles, which are commonly found in school buses.
- SCHOOL BUS and PASSENGER:Â This segment focuses on the unique skills and knowledge necessary to safely operate a school bus and passenger vehicles, ensuring the safety of students and regular passengers.
Upon successfully passing the written examination and undergoing a Department of Transportation (DOT) physical, which is a medical evaluation, you will be granted a commercial learner permit (CLP). This permit allows you to practice school bus driving under the supervision of a licensed commercial driver.
At Crossway Driving School Inc., we provide a comprehensive course that thoroughly covers all the requisite material to excel in the written examination and effectively prepare for the practical road test. Our course is designed to equip you with the knowledge and skills necessary for school bus operation. Throughout your journey, our experienced and certified instructors will guide you every step of the way, ensuring your readiness for a successful school bus driving career.
